Message from Project Director
Women are key drivers of sustainable agricultural development throughout the world. Their involvement in agriculture is critical especially for labour and skill-intensive high-value products such as vegetables, fruit and animal products whose share in agricultural output and international trade has been consistently growing over the last decades, reflecting a global switch from more basic food to better and more elaborated food. They also usually provide most of the workforce in post-farm gate activities such as processing and retail. Last but not least, women are leading consumers of food products as they usually have to choose what is good, affordable and healthy for their families. They are therefore the ones most interested by better food security and more rigorous food safety. We met with Nargizi 15 years ago, in France, where she was in charge of the twinning programme between the department of Yonne in Burgundy and Kakheti.
